Benefits of oat milk

Oat milk is made from oats and water, from there you can add what ever other flavours you like. It is a great choice for people with an intolerance or allergy to lactose and dairy. This milk is free from animal products, soya, and all types of nuts. It is also a great source of fibre and carbohydrates. This recipe is so easy to make you simply blend the oats in water, using cold water helps to stop the oat milk from becoming slightly slimy in texture. I like to use 750g of water and 250g of ice to make this recipe but you can also use 1 litre of chilled water and get the same results. Another benefit of making oat milk yourself is its a fraction of the cost to buying the off the shelf versions, as well as the being fresher, tastier and completely customisable. Oat milk has a creamy texture and a mild flavour that makes it a great replacement for traditional dairy milk you can use it in coffee, tea, smoothies, cereal, porridge and all types of baking.

Tips & Tricks

  • Use ice and water or very cold water, as long as your total water content equals 1 litre for this amount of oats.  The idea is the liquid never heats up when blending, which can result in the slimy texture that oat milk sometimes has. This is because the oats start to cook a little with the heat from the blender.
  • Let the oat milk drip through the nut milk bag, cheesecloth or tea towel with little or no force. This can make your oat milk grainy which will split in tea of coffee for example.• If your using cheesecloth or a tea towel, and the milk comes out grainy then try straining through the cloth a few times to filter out more bits of oat.

Prep Time 5 minutes
Additional Time 5 minutes
Total Time 5 minutes

Ingredients

  • 750 ml or 3 Cups of water
  • 250g or 8.8oz of Ice
  • 60g or 3/4 cup oats (all kinds work)

Instructions

  1. Add the oats, water and ice to a liquidizer or blender. You could also achieve a good result with a stick blender but i would use 1 litre of very cold water rather than ice. Blend for 30 seconds.
  2. Strain the liquid through a nut milk bag, 3 to 4 layers of cheesecloth or even a tea towel folded over a few times.  Don’t squeeze the liquid through too much at this stage, that can result in a grainy texture in the final milk.
  3. Then simply bottle and refrigerate, this will last upto 5 days chilled.
