Make Great Red Cabbage This Christmas

On Christmas day my oven always gets overloaded.

I’m juggling turkey, roast potatoes, stuffing, cauliflower cheese…. the list goes on. Thats why I always make this braised red cabbage recipe.

It gets made completely on the stove top, only uses one saucepan, its alcohol free, comes together quick, can be made ahead of time…… There’s plenty more to shout about with this recipe.

Also, I’ll show you an easy trick I use to help keep its deep beautiful colour.

So let’s get into it.

Make Great Red Cabbage This Christmas

This red braised red cabbage recipe is perfect for your Christmas spread.

It comes together quickly, uses one pan only, can be made ahead of time and reheated and it keeps that deep purple colour we all want.

Prep Time 5 minutes
Cook Time 30 minutes
Total Time 35 minutes

Ingredients

  • 1 x head cabbage, shredded (small to medium sized)
  • 1 x Apple, grated
  • 125ml Apple cider vinegar
  • 60g brown sugar
  • 1 x small cinnamon stick
  • 100ml water (use more if needed, see video)
  • Salt

Instructions

  1. Grate the apple, add to a large saucepan with the vinegar, sugar and a little salt.
  2. Place that pan onto a high heat, stir in the sugar to dissolve. Once simmering bring the heat down to low and place a lid on the pan, leave to cook for 10-15 minutes.
  3. Slice the cabbage.
  4. Add the cabbage to the saucepan, with the water and some more salt.
  5. Cook on a high heat with the lid on for 5 minutes until the cabbage has visibly wilted and softened.
  6. Stir to get everything mixed together well, lid back on and lower the heat.
  7. Cook for a further 20 to 40 minutes, depending on how soft you want the cabbage to be.
